At Humber River Health, volunteers are an integral part of our hospital. Every day, our volunteers make a positive difference.

We are currently accepting applications for volunteer service in the:
Year-Round Volunteer Program

Requirements

To be a Humber River Health volunteer, you must:

  • Be at least 16 years of age.
  • Have excellent customer service, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Fluency in English (verbal and written).
  • Uphold our values of compassion, professionalism and respect.
  • Commit to:
    • One 4-hour shift a week for an entire year (Year-Round Program).
    • Or two 4-hour shifts a week for June, July and August (Summer Program: post-secondary students).
    • Or two 4-hour shifts a week for July and August (Summer Program: high school students).

A second language is an asset.

Process

  1. Complete the online application form.
  2. You will receive an email within 4 business days which includes: the reference form and volunteer health assessment form.
  3. Attend an interview and submit your reference forms.
  4. Complete the volunteer health assessment with your family physician or at a walk-in clinic. Any costs associated with the health assessment are the volunteer’s responsibility. Completion of the health assessment does not guarantee a placement. The health assessment consists of:
    • Two-step TB test
    • Proof of immunization to measles, mumps, rubella, varicella (chicken pox) OR proof of immunity via blood work
    • Proof of DTap vaccination
  5. Attend an orientation session and a training session for your volunteer role.

Patient Support

In an inpatient unit, you’ll help by:

  • Visiting with patients
  • Helping patients at mealtimes
  • Assist with recreational activities

This opportunity is also available at our Finch and Church sites.

In an outpatient clinic, you’ll help by:

  • Greeting patients
  • Providing information
  • Escorting patients
  • Comforting patients

Lobby Services

In this role, you’ll help by:

  • Greeting and escorting patients and visitors
  • Taking patient inquiry phone calls
  • Answering questions and providing information

Gift Shop

In this role, you’ll help by:

  • Welcoming patients, families and visitors
  • Helping customers select and buy items
  • Selling OLG tickets

Talent Sharing

If you have a special talent, let us know! We are always looking for volunteers who have talents to share with patients. Our volunteers help enhance the patient experience through music, art and knitting, to name a few.
