Welcome to the Humber River Health Breast and Bone Health Centre where we bring together the best technology and our expert team to provide our patients with the highest level of care and compassion.

At Humber River Health, we understand that a breast cancer diagnosis can be overwhelming and stressful. Our team of physicians, technologists and nurses are committed to helping women monitor, treat, and recover from breast health issues. We offer a wide range of services, including screening, diagnosis, care planning, and treatment. Some services can even happen all in the same visit, making it more convenient for our patients. Our clinic uses the latest innovations in breast surgery, such as radioactive breast seed localization, to ensure that our patients receive the most advanced care possible.

Humber River Health is proud to be part of the Ontario Breast Screening Program, which is a screening program designed to encourage people to be screened for breast cancer. The program provides mammograms to women between the ages of 50 and 74 who are residents of Ontario and have a valid health card without requiring a physician’s imaging requisition. By participating in this program, we aim to detect breast cancer early, when it is most treatable.

Benefits

  • Early Detection: Getting screened regularly with mammography can find cancer early when it is less likely to have spread to other parts of the body. Early detection can improve patient outcomes and make treatment more effective.
  • Innovative Techniques: We recently began performing radioactive seed localization whereby a tiny seed is used to identify and target abnormal tissue for removal during surgery.
  • Focused Care: Our team is dedicated to supporting our patients through their journey. We work collaboratively with our breast surgeons providing expedited consultation services with our center and we can often perform multiple tests on the same visit.

High Risk Ontario Breast Screening Program

What is the High Risk Ontario (HR-OBSP) Breast Screening Program?

The HR-OBSP is designed to provide enhanced screening for women, trans, and non-binary people aged 30 to 69 who are deemed high risk for breast cancer based on an eligibility criteria. Every year eligible participants will receive both a mammogram and breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and screening breast ultrasound if breast MRI is not medically appropriate.

How to Apply?

  • Physician referral is required (High Risk OBSP Requisition)
  • Patients must have a valid Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) number
  • Patients must not have any breast symptoms
  • Patients must not have had a bilateral mastectomy

Eligibility Criteria

  1. Direct entry into the HR OBSP program based on personal and family history
    • Known carrier of a gene variant that increases their risk of breast cancer (BRCA1,BRCA2)
    • First degree relative of a carrier of a gene variant who has had genetic counselling but no testing
    • Previously assessed by a genetics clinic and has a 25% or greater lifetime risk of breast cancer

Next Steps for patients who are approved to be screened with the High Risk Ontario Breast Screening Program

  • Once both tests have been completed and reported by the radiologist results will be sent to the primary care provider
  • Patients will also receive results letters by mail a few weeks after their screening tests have been completed
  • Each year patients will receive a reminder letter that they are due for screening and they can book their annual screening tests
