Hospital continues to demonstrate commitment to patient safety and innovation
TORONTO – Humber River Health (Humber) has been featured in CBS News’ Innovators and Disruptors Leaders Series. CBS’ campaign spotlights organizations and institutions that have demonstrated a commitment to agility and adaptability in the face of disruption. As a leader in innovation, Humber has dedicated decades to redefining healthcare and is known for being a high reliability hospital that is deeply committed to patient safety.
As the first fully digital hospital in North America, the hospital leverages a cutting-edge Command Centre that orchestrates seamless patient care behind the scenes. As the first of its kind in Canada, the Command Centre has evolved into a centralized system that optimizes patient safety and care quality. It addresses common issues like long wait times and poor patient flow, resulting in early interventions and responsible decision-making. Furthermore, the Command Centre’s innovative Early Warning Systems (EWS), notably the Clinical Deterioration tile, proactively detects and mitigates patient deterioration, leading to a significant reduction in critical events such as a 10 per cent reduction in sepsis cases and a 40 per cent decrease in Code Blues.
Humber has also invested significantly in groundbreaking surgical technologies like the ROSA® Knee System and the da Vinci Xi to perform minimally invasive procedures. In addition, Humber utilizes the Intellijoint HIP® for total hip replacements, and the Acessa ProVu® system for minimally invasive gynecological surgeries, among many others.
Person-centered care extends beyond the operating room through pain management innovations like SKiP and COIN that reduce narcotic use and help protect the long-term well-being of patients. Families and support persons of patients are also considered in Humber’s innovative technology. The STERIS RealView patient tracking system offers real-time surgical progress updates to empower loved ones with information.
“Humber River Health’s goal is to continue to innovate, continue to use technology to provide better, safer care, and allow our practitioners to support our patients in a better way,” said Barb Collins, President and CEO of Humber River Health. “We aim to empower our practitioners with the tools and resources they need to provide the best care for our patients, and we want them to have the unique opportunity of learning how to use technology and innovations to enhance healthcare.”
“This hospital is technologically very advanced. They prioritize communication, keeping patients informed, allowing them to feel comfortable and involved in decision-making,” commented Humber River Health patient, Mary Porjes, shortly after her surgery.
A formative belief at Humber is that innovation is sparked when teams collaborate to advance a cause far greater than themselves. Guided by the mission of working together with their community to deliver innovative, safe and equitable healthcare, Humber is eager to continue lighting new ways in healthcare.
