Surgical Program

Committed to patient-centred and innovative surgical care delivery, Humber River Hospital’s Surgical Program is recognized across Ontario and around the globe for its excellence in a broad range of surgical specialties and sub-specialties, for both pediatric and adult patients.

The Program is comprised of a dedicated and highly skilled team of surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses and allied care experts, each committed to meeting the unique needs of our diverse community within a model of high quality, safe, respectful care.

Humber River Hospital is home to Ontario’s first Centre of Excellence for Bariatric Surgery. Our bariatric surgery program has been accredited as a Level One Program by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) under its Bariatric Surgery Center Network (BSCN) Accreditation Program. This Humber River program is the first outside the United States to receive this accreditation.

Our Surgical Program provides expertise and services through both our inpatient units and in our clinics. Our inpatient units support patients through all stages of recovery and each inpatient floor has its own physiotherapy room for easy patient access.

Humber River’s focus on minimally invasive surgery (MIS) has resulted in our Surgical Program being a recognized national leader in this evolving field. Gynecology, Bariatric, and general surgery are areas where the Program is an acknowledged leader in MIS.

The Humber River Surgical Program is equipped with state-of-the-art technology including our Robotic Program. Surgeons are able to perform robotic assisted surgery with the da Vinci Surgical System, a leading-edge medical technology using computer-assisted cameras to guide tiny robotic arms to access hard-to-reach areas of the body with greater precision.

We also have integrated video systems linking all 20 operating rooms to streamline patient flow and care.

We are excited to be the first Surgical Program in Canada to use the Steris RealView patient tracking system. This system uses Real Time Locating System (RTLS) technology to track patients using smartphone technology throughout their surgical journey. This includes all stages from registration, through Pre-operation Admission, to the Operating Room or the Cystoscopy Suite and Post Anaesthetic Care Unit to Surgical Daycare for discharge or admission to the inpatient unit if they are staying overnight.

We take pride in our affiliations with the University of Toronto and Queen’s University in sharing our expertise in minimally invasive surgery with their surgery students. Our surgeons have also performed live surgeries through video feed to teach the intricacies of bariatric surgery to a conference with 500 international surgeons.
